You can sense the finale.

…all of a sudden boom! bang! boom!

Each second dozens of fireworks explode into the sky, painting the dark night with a vibrant fire.

This climax indicates the inevitable…yes folks, the finale.

So like any good show, I leave you with a watercolorWEDNESDAY finale.

Its been such a pleasure to share watercolorWEDNESDAY with you for…gulp…37 wonderful weeks! Sharing my work with you every week has given me the opportunity to explore the medium of watercolor to new heights. The weekly reminder has given me reason to paint, to explore, to learn and to share.

If one were to ask me what I have learned most about watercolor painting through these weeks, it is patience. Waiting for layer after layer to dry and repeat has taught me much about patience (do you know how much time the Utzon Church took to paint?!?). And with this artistic patience I have found patience in my own life. Above all else, my experience abroad has taught to live patiently and faithfully in every moment I have been blessed with while here.

So now for the finale.

I could not just give you one painting.

So here are some of my favorite places around Copenhagen.

Swans at the Lakes. I wonder if it was here that HC Andersen was inspired to write The Ugly Duckling?

Colorful row houses of Nyboder. Built by King Christian IV in 1641 and still going strong!

Bridge to Christianshavn. Although I don’t visit this part of the city often, I love the colorful architecture, cozy canals and sunsets reflected through the west facing windows.

Biking through Fælledparken. In days with good weather (and when I feel like my allergies can take the hit) I love taking the shortcut through Copenhagen’s central park and being surrounded by fields of green.

Ørstedsparken in spring. Yes, it might be known as the gay-park, but its still my favorite park in Central Copenhagen thanks to its fairy tale feeling and willows that drape into the colorful reflective pond.

And now for a shameless plug…

I have a handful of wonderful friends currently raising support to participate in a handful of wonderful Christian mission trips this summer sponsored by Cru. And to help them with support raising along the way I will be selling some of my original paintings and well as making greeting cards sets of prints from the year. Depending on the size of painting, originals will be for sale starting at $30 and greeting card sets (sets of 6 +envelopes) at $15. If you are interested in purchasing some of my work please contact me at kstabler@calpoly.edu so I can get a feel for the interest level.

I am also available to do custom paintings if interested.

Tusindtak!

In five classes, we covered five centuries worth of history and literature.

I realized over the semester that I hugely preferred the DIS tours because we had opportunities to experience cities beyond the typical tourist traps.

For example, our class' first stop was Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

We saw the Globe during the international season, where they'll perform 37 plays in 37 languages! We had the opportunity to watch a rehearsal of Richard II in Palestinian Arabic. It was so surreal getting to watch a rehearsal of a Shakespeare play (even if we couldn't understand a word) on the stage of the Globe itself. Afterwards, we participated in a Macbeth workshop with whom I presume is an acting coach and expert in Shakespearean plays.

Next, our class had the option of either going to the Churchill War Rooms or an exhibit for Dickens' 200th anniversary of his birth. I consider myself more of a literature nerd than a history buff, so I chose the Dickens exhibit at the Museum of London.

That afternoon, we reunited for a traditionally English high tea, filled with finger sandwiches, scones, and the tastiest tea I've ever had in my life. I've never even liked tea all that much and it was delicious!

It was super fancy too- jeans and sneakers weren't permitted. It was undoubtedly the classiest place I've ever been... I even learned how to properly hold up my pinky while drinking tea! I was quite sophisticated that afternoon.

Immediately after our super classy afternoon, we head over to the West End to see one of my favorite musicals, Billy Elliot!

I had seen the show on tour in Charlotte last year, but this was beyond excellent. I cried no less than five times.

The following morning, we split up into pairs to complete assignments that we would later present to the class. Some people walked along Oxford Street, looking at how Virginia Woolf's description of the street in the '20's compares to the street today, another group travelled through most of the lines of the Tube to gain a better understanding of London's transportation system. My assignment was titled "Walking the Wall," and our task was to trace the path of the ancient Roman Wall that 2000 years ago, defined the perimeters of the city. This project consumed Saturday morning and it ended up being an interesting, personalized walking tour of the city.

We later met up at the National Portrait Gallery which was far more fascinating than any other museum visit I've been to this semester, largely because of the activities our tour leaders had planned for us. We broke up into six groups of two and each pair of us analyzed a portrait from a different period of London (we did Romanticism) and presented this to the rest of the group.

We ran into this guy:

(he's pretty famous, right?)

That night, we had traditional fish and chips (which aren't actually chips, but french fries. This is something I know I should have known, but it still came as quite a shock to me) at another super posh restaurant. Honestly, the Literary London tour was the classiest weekend of my life.

Oh, did I mention I went to Kings Cross and hopped on Platform 9 3/4? Turns out my letter from Hogwarts was only 9 years lost in the mail.

ahhh, it's the Millennium Bridge! I hope the Death Eaters don't destroy it like they did in the sixth Harry Potter movie!

This is the tallest building in Europe! London was very strange for me when we first arrived and not exactly what I expected. Even though I've been to 8 countries in Europe now, this is the first time I've seen any skyscrapers! I thought that London was going to have that quaint, European city feel to it, but it ended up being more metropolitan (and overwhelming) than I expected. Regardless, the study tour exceeded my expectations in every way!

side note: By sheer luck, out of the nearly 8 million people in London, I happened to run into my cousin, Lauren!

The end is near. Well, kind of. While all of my friends and roommates are talking about what they’re going to do (and eat) when they get home at the end of the week, I have spent what seems like every waking hour at the Russian embassy trying to get a tourist visa for the next month and a half of my travels. Mother Russia and I are not pals.

Regardless, the past few weeks have been a whirl of making to-do lists (first about finals work, then about final sights to see around town), and there hasn’t been a whole lot of time to think about things or make plans, but here are a few exciting happenings you missed:

1) A few months ago our floor made a sticker chart for dish and kitchen cleaning. It sort of worked, mostly for public shaming. But recently we instituted a new sticker chart. A wellness sticker chart. It’s still about public shaming. But this time we can add a sticker if we get 8 hours of sleep or eat extra vegetables. If there was any question as to whether we are running an illegal kindergarten up here, I have eaten ants on a log for snack time twice this week instead of chocolate (and I gave myself a sticker).

2) I finally took a picture of my street!

(Well, this isn’t exactly my street, it’s the street behind my street that I walk down every day to get to class, but I can enter our courtyard from this street, so it kind of counts, right?)

And I checked a bunch of other things off of my bucket list like going to to Tycho Brahe’s observatory. Yes. Tycho Brahe’s observatory. It happens to be down my street. It is very cool and still operational.

This is the view from the top! (also notice every wind turbine in Denmark*)

And my friends Tyler and Suzannah looking at some cool space maps!!

3) This morning in a fit of misplaced frustration I cleaned our entire kitchen. Our spices are now organized from sweet to savory and our grains are separated by gluten level. I sure am glad we’re leaving just in time for me to swiftly locate the paprika.

4) It wouldn’t be a blog post without a culinary update: I learned how to poach an egg! I did it on the first try this morning! I am the master of eggy goodness! All brunches will be mine!

BONUS: Some Photos from Travel Break!!

Our first night at the farm formerly named WubWub** in Gargantilla, our boss Nacho (he was real) took us to a party in a bar in the town over— The bar was not larger than this photograph. It was a “TV Serials” party— All those pictures on the wall and ceiling, including Mr. Baywatch, are from different American TV shows. The bartender changed costume 3 times (did I forget to mention this was a costume party: it was a costume party). There were grown-ups dressed as teletubbies.

Lo and behold— the town of Gargantilla, Spain. There are only so many people out because it’s Sunday and everyone just got out of church. The bottom floor of the white building with the green shutters was the organization’s office. We slept there. We also painted the attic one day.

I helped plant those potatoes in the field to the left. You can tell because the rows are wavy. We also had to dig trenches around the fruit trees. That was one of my trees.

In Salamanca the university had a building with lots of sea shells on it.

Salamanca also sells bread without the crust.

I managed to go for 5 days in Paris without taking a single picture that’s worth putting up here… There were a lot of churches. But, for the money shot, here’s my cousin Molly and I in front of the astrological clock in Prague!!

We walked up this really tall hill and I was about to kill my cousin because I had been up since 4:30 in the morning and I was not wearing appropriate footwear, but then I saw tourists doing dumb things to faceless babies, and everything was fine. (And the view from the top of the hill was really worth it.)

This sculpture was done by the same guy who made the faceless babies (not the tourists…).

I went to Budapest for 36 hours. It was really great!

Tomorrow I am supposed to go to a castle with my visiting sister and get brunch. I do not see how it could possibly get better than that.

S

*That’s a lie; there are more wind turbines in Denmark. I know, I’ve seen all of them.

**It turns out that the farm is actually not named WubWub at all, it’s called deAmicita, and it’s not even one farm. From what we could gather (and believe me, we asked) the organization operates as a go-between with local farmers and work/stay volunteers… but, let’s just say that not all non-profits run like a business. Very long story short, we came, we spent 3 days doing really disorganized labor, and we left, having conquered absolutely nothing but our self-knowledge that real beds and heat are important.

I am done with my papers!! Never again will I have four research papers all due within the same two day period! Well, at least not until graduate school, but that’s a year or two away. One test to go and I’m done with the academics of the semester.

Despite the absurd amount of research, reading, and writing I did over the past 4 days, I still managed to get out a little and make something of my weekend…I couldn’t let my last full weekend in Denmark go to waste.

Friday afternoon I led Grace and Molly to the Sushi place I’d enjoyed the weekend before for an early dinner/celebration of the end of classes. We arrived kind of awkwardly early, actually, two minutes before the place even opened, and they were still mopping the floors and setting the tables. It was nice to be the only customers in the restaurant though, because the service was so fast.

From the restaurant we went back to DIS to see the Photojournalism Exhibition. I had several friends in the photojournalism class, and it was really cool to see some of their best pieces of work on display. Each student’s series of photographs told a story about a specific subject, and many of the subjects came to the exhibition. I thought it was really intriguing to see what the photos said about the subjects, and then to observe how the subjects carried themselves in “real life.” DIS supplied the event with fruit, crackers, chocolate, some little hors d’oeuvres, and wine to make an event of the exhibition, and two of my friends did a presentation informing everyone about the intentions of their assignments/what it was like to take the class. I thought it was a pretty cool little event.

Saturday I did lots and lots of writing. As a writing break, I went with Jakob and Kristina to check out “the creative part of Roskilde.” I guess that the city of Roskilde has been working hard to create an area full of creative and artistic inspiration. A big Rock Music Museum is in the works, and that will probably be the big attraction there. However, currently there is a dance studio, a bunch of artist studios, and some concert venues. Also, a luminescent-y light-up playground.

I guess this area isn’t very well known yet, so they had a little open house type thing to spread the word. The open house included various live bands,a dj, a fifties themed roller skating rink, a local art sale, dance performances, a flea market, some food, and who knows what else. It was the most random thing that I’ve seen in Roskilde so far, but it was a really fun little homework break, and also a new part of Roskilde for me.

After submitting a paper I joined two other Roskilde dwellers, Molly and Rachel at the train station and we went in to Copenhagen together. This is when the Thai transvestite strip club incident occurred. We finally did make it to our final destination, a club called Ware House 9. I know that I mentioned going here before, it’s a “live body art” performance venue in the meat packing district of Copenhagen. Unfortunately no performance was going on, last time it was really interesting. But the Blus group (which is essentially the GSA/GLBTQ group of Copenhagen, formed of Danes, DIS students, and other international students) was throwing a party there, and it was a really good night. Lots of good people from DIS came, and it was full of eclectic music, dancing, and catching up with other students who have also spent the last few weeks as hermits writing papers and such.

Molly & I at Warehouse 9 before the dancing began.

It was held on Amager Strand, which is a park by a beach right outside Copenhagen. We were so lucky to have good weather for it. It was almost sixty degrees and sunny all afternoon! I think it's the first time that I've worn shorts all semester. There was also free food and it was a nice excuse to ignore upcoming exams and spend the afternoon with friends. I'm also glad that I got to see this part of Copenhagen before I left!

My apologies, this post is way overdue! Better late than never, right?

I have just completed my studies at DIS and I am now soaking up one last week in Copenhagen before…sigh…heading back to the Golden State (I really have no justification for complaining, this year has been amazing!). More on leaving later, but for now enjoy some of the shenanigans in Copenhagen with old friends.

Two weeks ago I had the joy of entertaining five Cal Poly friends that have been studying in Florence for the year. Us Copenhagen Cal Poly kids rallied together to show these good friends a good time in our city that has become home. Adventures in the woods, trampolines by the harbor, soccer games and good food were all part of our adventures!

Kristina and I spent a day exploring the woods in the outskirts of Copenhagen. Never know what you are going to find out there!

We discovered an abandon castle/fortress of some sort which made a wonderful opportunity to use our camera’s self timer and find some…expressive…shots.

Welcome to the rest of the gang! No proper visit in Copenhagen would be complete without getting a bike. Good work boys!

Trampolines by the harbor = hours of entertainment.

New Single coming soon…

When most people visit the infamous Little Mermaid they stand on shore, smile and take a photo with Denmark’s doll in the background.

But not Kristina.

She wanted to get up-close-and-personal with this special lady…and almost got stuck in the process.

Enjoying the world’s best chai latte’s on the Lakes!

FC København v. Aarhus Fodbol Kamp! We dragged our Florentine friends down to a game to experience Danish soccer at its best. Jooo joo jooo!

The Poly section.

Hygge. Brunch with Kristina before departing for…ahh…four months!

A few weeks ago, the GreenHouse visited Svanholm, which is the largest organic farm in Denmark! They also are a community of about 80 adults and 60 children with a shared economy, where everyone puts their incomes in a common poll and each are allocated a certain amount each month. About half of the adults work outside of the community with the others working on the farm. They focused on sustainability and self-sufficiency, and creating a good life for themselves and their families. Our two tour guides were very nice and willing to give us a tour of how they live their life. They also gave us ice cream made by a local business with milk from their cows, which was a nice perk. It was certainly an example of an alternative society, but one which truly seems to work, especially on such a small scale, and that it would be an absolutely lovely place to live.

After finishing classes on Friday, I went to Tivoli. It's located right in the center of Copenhagen, and I walk past it everyday on my walk from Central Station to DIS. Once you're inside, though, you nearly forget that you're right in the middle of Copenhagen. I've walked by it so many times, but never realized quite how incredible it is. There are beautiful gardens and flowers that line each path, a boating lake and many rides and other attractions. It's one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, and Disney world was actually based off of it! Walt Disney visited Tivoli in the 1900's and was so impressed by it that he decided that he wanted to build something like it.

My friends and I all got a ride pass, and tested out quite a few. I chose not to go on the biggest rollar coster, but had fun on a number of the others. It was also just nice to wander around the park and take in the atmosphere and ambiance. It was beautiful weather and the park was full of both Danes and tourists. I'm hoping to take my parents and sister there when they're in Copenhagen. I don't feel like I got to see everything in my afternoon there and would love to return with them. My host parent's grandson also is part of the Tivoli boys guard, which plays music in the park on the weekends. Another reason to go back!

I tried my best to take some pictures while I was there, but it's so hard to capture the feeling of being there in the pictures. It's a really unique place, and a real Copenhagen treasure. It's such a special place to have right there in the middle of the city.

Tivoli entrance.

Nimb hotel.

Tivoli from the ferris wheel. I think it helped that the venue was outdoors and everyone was already standing, and her music is a little more danceable that Wilco's. Everyone seemed much more into the music than they had been at the Wilco concert. We also managed to situate ourselves right next to a group of Danish teenagers who were unbelievably excited for the concert. I think there energy was contagious, since I found myself dancing and singing along to songs in a language I don't really know.

Medina!

Medina concert.

Medina in her nude, rhinestone encrusted body suit.

Medina once again.

Tivoli lights.
Molly, Becca and I bought our criminology professor flowers and wrote her a note on the last day of class, and that was the email she sent in thanks.

I’ve got the warm fuzzies going on.

When was the last time I liked a teacher so much that I wanted to get them a gift in thanks for being such a wonderful teacher/person?

Absolutely 100% not sucking up. She was just that great.

Yesterday morning, I had my usual three hour break between classes, and rather than spend it inside studying (or procrastinating), I decided to return to a few spots in Copenhagen that I hadn't visited since the beginning of the semester. I walked up Strøget to Nyhavn and continued on towards Amalienborg Palace. When I got there it was just before 11:30, and I remembered that each day the changing of the guard happens at noon. This was one of those touristy things that I had yet to do in Copenhagen, but figured I should see, especially since I was there so close to when it would happened. I walked around the area a bit before returning at noon to see the changing of the guards.

It was nothing spectacular, but I'm glad that I stayed to see it nonetheles. My host dad said that when the Queen is in they play music as they march in and that it's pretty amazing. The Queen, however, must not have been in yesterday since there was no music playing. text-align: center;">Statue of Fredrick V in the center of Amalienborg. Amazing how the dark clouds from just an hour before turned into this. That's Danish weather for you.

Afterwards, I walked to the Frihedsmuseet, which is the Danish Resistance Museum. It's free and I'd heard that it was worth going to if you got the chance. I stumbled upon it when I was walking around before the changing of the guards, and returned afterwards. Denmark was occupied by the Nazis during World War II, and the museum details the Danish government's resistance to Nazi rule. Denmark actually was given some independence. They figured that a Nazi victory in Europe was inevitable, and collaborated to a certain extent with the regime. From 1942 onwards, the resistance movement was able to grow stronger than in many other countries, in part due to this independence that Denmark was allowed. It was a small museum and nearly empty when I visited, which was nice. Afterwards I walked through Churchillparken, a small park nearby, and caught the train at Østerport back to DIS for my final Danish class.

Inside Frihedsmuseet.

Copenhagen streets.

Beautiful, green Copenhagen.

Last night I went to Tivoli and saw Medina, the more tame Danish equivalent of Lady Gaga, in concert. And one day, I threw them out into the yard. “Oh, it’s just a couple little innocent bad days.” Well, we had a big rain. I don’t know what it was growing in but I think we used to put eggshells out there and coffee grounds, too. Don’t plant your bad days. They grow into weeks. The weeks grow into months. Before you know it you got yourself a bad year. Take it from me. Choke those little bad days. Choke ‘em down to nothin’. They’re your days. Choke ‘em!”
